The Alhambra was one of my favourite places we visited, both for its beauty and its connection to so many historical events and figures. The architecture and level of detail in the palaces were incredible; from floor to ceiling everything was decorated. The stone facades were all carved with designs and scripture and would have been painted as well. The few places where the paint was preserved show just how much care was put into the building of this place. The ceiling paintings were fascinating to me since depictions of human or animal figures is usually forbidden in Islamic culture. This is an amazing example of how cultures influence and change one another when in proximity. After being taken by the Catholic monarchs the Alhambra was the site where Isabella finalized her agreement with Columbus for his voyage to India. It was also where the monarchs were residing when they signed the decree to expel the Jews from Spain.
